Following last weeks football victory, my thrown together cricket team won our first game by 3 wickets last night.
Hopefully this luck will continue through to my thesis/viva.Current Mood: cheerful Current Music: I Might Be Wrong - Radiohead

W00t!!!!!
We won!!!
Group Matches -
9-0 Win 8-1 Win 5-0 Win 7-0 Win 5-1 Win
Semi-Final
8-2 Win
Final (vs. Team Pharmacy - they beat us in the final last time round)
5-2 Win
The loss of our keeper and centreback couldn't stop us as a replacement striker was rushed in (Moses, you are awesome!), an untested replacement defender was given a debut (Fred, you are also awesome!) and a right sided midfielder took the berth between the posts and was widely recognised as the difference between the teams in the final two rounds (Me? I'm kinda awesome too!). To only concede 6 goals in a 6 match 5-a-side tournament is a great achievemment and our front three who rotated in and out played really well. We could have had twice as many goals if we'd been more ruthless against the weaker opposition.
So congrats to Me, Fred, Nic, Ronnie, Ismael and Moses! The trophy is back where it belongs! TGC F.C.!Current Mood: excited Current Music: Plug in Baby - Muse

Tube drivers are striking (again), this time over pay.
When they strike, London is crippled.
They have a starting salary of £27,656.
A police officer earns £27,682.
A firefighter earns £22,308.
How can tube drivers justify striking? Is driving a tube as dangerous as policing the streets? Do they work nights? Do they save lives? No. London Underground have a recruitment surplus - surely public service pay rises come through a lack of qualified applicants (which is why the police recently got a big pay rise and why the heavily over subscribed fire service didn't).
Lucky for me the train strike is off. Don't get me started on those guys.........Current Mood: angry Current Music: 2+2=5 (Radiohead)

» SCUMM VM
Just a quick post to tell you all that SCUMM VM is the best thing I've come across in a long time. It's an emulator for all those old point'n'click adventures you know and love like Monkey Island.
Go google it now and use some *ahem* less than reputable sources to get hold of the original games for it!
Oh, and ask me about LOOM (TM).

» Gifts That Don't Suck
Firstly, I've set my mood as "indescribable" because I'm curious what the expression of the smiley will be. Indescribable ecstasy? Agony? "I feel indescribable." "What's that like?" "WHAT DID I JUST SAY RAAAAR SMASH"
Ahem.
So anyhow, gifts that don't suck. I need to buy a gift for the girl (she seems to think 6 months is a worthwhile anniversary to celebrate - obviously doesn't think we'll make it to a year ;)) and my usual tack of "why should we celebrate - every day is like an anniversary, every minute a beautiful gift" didn't work ("You tight git").
So the only guidance I've been given is "romantic please".
Now usually, I do romantic gestures quite well. However, as soon as someone suggests it, I get the urge to buy them a PDA/Bluetooth Mouse/Other Gadget. Why is this?
I'll update again when I'm single, oh, I mean after I've given the gift. I think I'm gonna have to rely on the BLOKE FORMULA:
Derived from the girl formula T x A = OH, where T=Hours spent searching, A=Appropriateness of gift (measured in thank yous per minute) and OH= Overall Happiness (now I've got an image of a smiling boiler suit in my head).
Of course in the Bloke Formula T x A is replaced with £ (Cost). So, solving for gifts purchased by men, cost directly increases happiness.
Except I'm poor.
Bugger.

» I Love Bureaucracy
I've just received a document entitled "How to manage academic research records effectively".
The first line says - "It is important to retain records of all studies conducted...."
It also says in the contents - "Record Keeping requirements - Pg4."
Page 4 is missing from every copy distributed.
Now that is funny.
I seem to spend more and more of my time filling out risk assesments, order forms, Home Office forms, health questionnaires. None of these have any bearing on my day to day functioning other than to get in the way of doing experiments.
God knows how I'll cope when I leave academia.

» HOW MUCH!
Quick drinkies last night degenerated into a bit of a midweek session.
THREE POUNDS A PINT!
OMFG.
London is becoming laughably expensive - now I know if I shopped around I could trek over to a Wetherspoons (read: cheap) pub, but in the London Bridge area £3 a pint is about the norm. That's English pounds, not Egyptian. So for all you budding publicans out there - OPEN A BAR IN LONDON BRIDGE AND CHARGE £1-50 FOR A PINT OF LAGER K THX BYE.
How can you justify £3? I suppose if we continue to pay it, they'll continue to charge it. Oh well, I'll take you all to the Students Union next time and suffer in a bar full of medical students.
It's enough to drive a man to drink.
Oh wait.........I can't afford drink anymore.
Bugger.

» Update? Wha?
Well, I've got round to posting a couple of things.
First up - Hefner just got his PhD.! Go you! It means I'm the only one of the original 5 guys left (although I did start last by about 9 months). I'm hoping to be done by October. Fingers crossed ;)
Second up, got horribly sunburnt at Lord's on Monday. Well, that's what you get if you skive the day to watch the Cricket.
Thirdly, I've finally updated so there tp ;)

Raining. Again.
This kind of (summer!) weather reminds me that I need to get my jacket waterproofed.
Dammit, I want sunshine so I can play frisbee!
Watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind this weekend and can heartily recommend it. I'll be posting more comments on Brunchma.

» The joys of an empty office........
After a rather pointless progress meeting yesterday with my supervisor, I arrive today to an almost empty office/lab.
Our full complement consists of - 1 x Professor, 1 x Reader, 1 x Vet/Lecturer, 1 x Research Assistant, 1 x Visiting Lecturer, 4 x Post Doctoral fellows, 7 x PhD Students, 2 x MSc Project Students, 1 x BSc Project Student and 1 x Secretary.
Today's complement is 2 x PhD Students and 1 x Secretary.
Bank holiday weekend starting early for a few of us..............
It's remarkably hard to motivate yourself when the rest of your colleagues are bunking off, so I'll spend the day doing some housekeeping on my Powerbook and e-mailing anyone who happens to be in my address book.
As an aside, last night I saw a documentary on the incompetence of the Royal Mail. I was shocked. And bear in mind, I used to work at PC World..........nothing should shock me anymore. I recommend that anyone reading this send all correspondence via pigeon post or pony express from now on.
Oh, or by e-mail, of course.

» Wheeee! Took me long enough.......
Weeelllll.
I've certainly missed the boat with this, but that's pretty much me all over. I'm sure I should launch into some kind of (monster?) welcome diatribe here, but that's really not me.
So, six months to go until I finish my PhD., this is when you get to start hearing about office politics involving people you'll never meet, lab work that consistently goes wrong and other vitriolic rants about random subjects.
On a lighter note, I'm going to Florida in a few weeks for a conference. Yay!
